Battlefields & Cemeteries

The Evergreens Cemetery
Brooklyn, New York

Landscapes was engaged to review interments underway along Mausoleum Row in the Lawnside area of the cemetery and to design a landscape setting for the expanded mausoleum complex. These elements of continuing use were in contrast to the historic cemetery character. The Evergreens Cemetery commissioned Heritage Landscapes to design for the integration of the new facilities within the surrounds of the 19th century burial grounds attributed to Andrew Jackson Downing, Calvert Vaux and Samuel Parsons.

Heritage Landscapes provided design for the paths, grading, drainage and plantings around the Chapel Mausoleum. The design of pedestrian walks encompassing the mausoleum complex shaped the entry sequence and provided spatial definition within the complex. The walks aligned with critical building axes to reinforce the contemporary architectural style of the mausoleums and shaped areas for planting. The system of walks facilitated future expansion of the complex to include future mausoleum structures. Heritage Landscapes introduced the addition of smaller cremains walls within the complex to supplement the larger mausoleums. An informal canopy tree planting along the street blending with the adjacent historic landscape framed the existing and enlarged mausoleum complex. Flowering trees provide seasonal interest and screening while focused garden plantings add interest and display around the structures. The plantings frame vistas of the surrounding grounds, reinforce axial relationships within the complex, and provide a spatially defined, intimate setting for the mausoleum complex. Future historic research and an overall historic landscape planning process that incorporates ongoing internments is proposed for 2004 after the Mausoleum project is completed in spring 2004 with fine grading and plantings.
