At the Virginia State Capitol, Heritage Landscapes is currently working with the Hillier-led multi-disciplinary team on construction of the renovation of the Jefferson-designed capitol, rehabilitation of the capital square landscape, and enhanced visitor experience of this historic site in anticipation of the 2007 quatercentenary of the state of Virginia. The landscape design addresses the integration of visitor arrival and progression with the needs of this working capitol, while recapturing the open, sloping South Lawn, incorporating a new Inaugural Plaza and responding to the Extension with a new entry court on Bank Street. Several sustainability issues are incorporated throughout the project. Such examples include reusing of stone, iron and brick materials through careful removals, recordation and reinstallation; selecting of local and regional materials such as Georgia Gray granite; management of stormwater, soils and site degradation during construction; selecting efficient planter wall emitter irrigation; and specifying a small green roof over the new Extension entry. Through close collaboration with the project architects, structural and civil engineers, security, media, utility, lighting, and sustainable design, the constructed work will honor and restore this historic civic landscape and integrate compatible but distinguishable new construction.
