Baltimore Park System Heritage Landscapes has worked with the Baltimore Department of Recreation & Parks and community on numerous projects that aimed to improve the quality of life for residents by enhancing the city park system. The projects studied the history and current and future uses of a range of historic park landscapes to provide a framework for park improvements, preservation, and overall renewal. A combination of narratives, images, illustrative plans, and construction drawings were created to document the origins, evolution, and existing conditions, and identify issues and preservation initiatives. For the Park Entries Study, a graphic capture of historic and current plans and views of park, estate, and neighborhood entries in a dozen US cities provided a vocabulary for potential treatments for the Baltimore parks. The Crimea Area Master Plan outlined projects for improved access, circulation, wayfinding, and diverse recreational opportunities. For Mount Vernon, a comprehensive framework was created to guide overall efforts while specific initiatives were outlined for each distinct park area. The historic character of Eutaw Place was recaptured with plans that addressed the visual axis, pathway arrangements, and vegetation. Rehabilitation at Latrobe Park focused on retaining intact historic features while redefining and reinforcing characteristic elements that had been altered over time. The Master Plan for Carroll Park provided an approach to upgrade park facilities, enhance recreational opportunities, and renew park access, circulation, and vegetation. The renewal plan for Druid Hill Park identified specific projects to enhance use, character, and functionality. Since the completion of the renewal plan, several recommendations have been implemented including the Memorial Segregated Pool design and construction, Memorial Tennis Court, Hydrology & Drainage Study, Maintenance Facilities Plan, and Palm House & Greenhouses Interior Rehabilitation. Since 1994, Heritage Landscapes has completed several projects for the City of Baltimore. While each focused on a specific public park, together the projects enhance the citywide park system, creating a cohesive network of highly-valued public open space.
